Austria and Hungary, the latter not always voluntarily, shared quite a long history. Austria, German-speaking, but not German, was clearly dominating the smaller Hungary (as well as a number of other territories on the Balkan) in matters of language, government, administration, and economy. One area where Austrian influence had limits was local foodways.
Reversely, Hungary’s influence can be seen in Austria: goulash, or Dobos cake are indicators that the cultural exchange was not just a one-way street. The course Food and Society will explore the similarities and distinct differences not only in Austrian and Hungarian cooking, but also the agricultural production and sales culture.
We will visit not only restaurants, sandwich shops, and coffee houses, but also vineyards, as well as the famous Naschmarkt (farmers market) in Vienna and the Grand Market Hall in Budapest. Furthermore, we will learn how to cook like a real Hungarian.
This course travels with the course “Austrian and Hungarian Arts and Culture”
and the course “Holocaust Memory in Austria and Hungary”
